Goal, Role, Audience, & Situation

Goal, Role, Audience, & Situation - Text

Goal:  As an Industrial Engineer you will design equipment to help improve workstations.

Role: You are an Industrial Engineer and your role is to develop a new workstation and material list.

Audience: Your audience will be the design review team at Steelcase.

Situation: Nearly 86% of Americans sit for a major part of their job. As more and more people continue to work from home, that percentage will continue to increase. The United States Department of Labor wants to make sure work environments are safe for employees. They aim to ensure employers provide quality work environments.

Because of the increased number of people working from home and sitting for most of their job, ergonomics has been a high priority for many companies. It is important that people are efficient at work, but also have the proper equipment to prevent musculoskeletal disorders in the workplace.
Steelcase is well aware of the demand to make sure there is proper equipment for people to be protected at their workplace. They focus on office furniture solutions and need you to help design workstations that help prevent musculoskeletal disorders in the workplace. You will need to come up with a new workstation design and a material list to help move the project forward.

Workstation Design Workstation Design Material List
Design a workstation that will help prevent or reduce musculoskeletal disorders. Create a material list to help organize what materials may be needed to build a workstation.

Product #1

Workstation Design: Design a workstation that will help prevent or reduce musculoskeletal disorders. The workstation is for people who mainly work on their computer. The workstation cannot be more than 6 feet wide by 8 feet deep. The workstation needs to include (but not limited to) the following:

  • Desk space for a desktop and laptop computer

  • Desk space to set papers and take notes

  • An adjustable chair

  • An adjustable desk for different heights

  • A treadmill, elliptical, or exercise bike (pick 1)

You will need to research, or use the resources below, to consider how to create a workstation with the components listed. Your design should be a newly invented design where customers can purchase this workstation as one unit. It will not work to have all those components separate. As an Industrial Engineer, you need to design an all-in-one workstation that will fit within the dimensions listed above. Your design may be hand drawn or done electronically.

Product #2

Workstation Design Material List: Create a material list to help organize what materials may be needed to build a workstation that will help prevent or reduce musculoskeletal disorders. The list needs to include the number of items, description of each item, and intended use to build the workstation. If you know the cost of the item, you may add a column for costs as well. The material list should be done in a spreadsheet format to help organize the items and information.
